SPD or also know as Sensory Intergration Disorder (SID) is when the brain has trouble communicating with the nervous system, in regards to your senses.
Our 4 year old was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder after being evaluated, from what we thought could have been a behavioral matter. It actually took a year for her to even been seen to be evaluted the process seemed so long. I noticed these behaviors as concerning as her mother and wanted her to be evaluated. Once everything was completed we were able to have a better idea for what she needed and could benefit from. She currently has an IEP (Individual Education Program) for occupational therapy and speech therapy and we have been taking her twice a week for both and we have seen a tremendous difference. An IEP is not given solely for SPD but our daughter is receiving speech therapy as well so this is why she has an IEP.

Next year we will be sending our oldest to UPK she needs it for more consistent socialization interactions. After UPK we will see what it looks like for homeschooling for if we have to extend her going to school possibly another year or so we will do so. I have not given up on homeschooling and we will homeschool our little ones. Plus I have been preschool homeschooling for the past few months anyway so nothing has changed there.
Having read that SPD can be genetic and going back through my childhood I remember having received OT and speech therapy as well for similar reasons as my daughter. I can remember struggling in school with some subjects so much so that the school district wanted to have my parents put me in special education. My parents refused and held me back a year which worked out better for me in the later years of school. I now know that I had SPD as well. You can outgrow SPD in certain areas you were once struggling with. I can remember as a child avoiding eating certain types of meat and certain foods in general. My parents would put it on my plate and I would give it to my siblings when they weren't looking and eat their vegetables haha. There are still certain textures of foods I can't bring myself to eat. You can have SPD and have no formal diagnosis. So I now know some of the key things to look for with our two younger little ones.
